New Orleans Hornets were formed in the 1988 as part of NBA expansion, the Hornets had 4 name changes since their formation, initially they were called the Charlotte Hornets but the interesting thing is that despite all name changes 2nd name was retained as Hornets. The name Hornets was selected as the New Orleans fought fiercely in the Revolution war and an army general gave this name to the brave people of this city. New Orleans Hornets became a trendsetting team as soon as they started playing because their team colors gold, purple, blue and white looked so nice that many other teams like the San Jose Sharks adopted it and the Hornets also were the first to introduce pin-stripes on their uniform which were later on adopted by the Orlando Magics, Toronto Raptors and Indiana Pacers. The Hornets are headquartered in New Orleans and play all their home matches at the New Orleans Arena.
Initially like other new expansion teams the Hornets were also struggling being novice to the game but they had signed a good leader Kelly Tripucka who used to play for the Detroit Pistons, the team failed to make an impression for the first few years. The Hornets were noticed for the first time in 1992-93 with star players like Larry Johnson and Dell Curry they stood 3rd in the Division and stunned everyone by beating the much more seasoned Boston Celtics 3-1 in the first round of playoffs but lost 1-4 in the semifinal to new York Nicks. In 1994-95 for the first time they stood 2nd in the Division but lost in first round playoffs to Chicago Bulls 1-3 and the same performance was repeated as the Hornets lost again in 1996-97 season in first round to their old rivals Nicks by 0-3.
The Hornets were continuously building a strong team and they acquired Matt Geiger, Glen Rice, Anthony Mason and David Wesley, this lineup was a real dead one as in 1997-98 they stormed again to the playoffs easily beating the Atlanta hawks 1-3 but they were defeated by the Bulls 1-4 in semifinal. The 1999-2000 season saw the rise of the Hornets as they got a new coach Paul Silas and drafted Baron Davis, Jamal Mashburn and P.J. Brown, the result was as expected, the Hornets regularly qualified for the playoffs till 2003-04 with top rankings in the Division, they also qualified twice for the semifinals but lost both the times. After this the next few seasons saw the Hornets struggling with some off court issues and this resulted in greatly reducing fan attendance and lowered popularity. With lots of hard work of coach Byron Scott and new draftees Bonzi Wells, Mike James and Julian Wright the Hornets again rose to prominence as they won their 1st ever Divisional title and went to the playoffs beating Dallas Mavericks but losing in the semifinals to the San Antonio Spurs 3-4.
2008-09 season was not a great one as the Hornets stood 4th in the Division but managed to qualify for the playoffs losing this time to the Denver Nuggets 1-4. Due to a bad 2009 season the team was in financial problems, a lot of player trades were done with lot of caution due to some tax issues and Scott was also fired. New Orleans Hornets are all set to improve their record in the upcoming season and for this they have a new coach and picked some really good players namely Marco Belinelli, Marcus banks, Jason Smith and Trevor Ariza.
