New York Islanders were formed in the year 1972 and the major credit for their formation can be given to the famous New York City lawyer William Shea who played an integral part in bringing a hockey team to New York State. The Islanders are the only team to win 4 Stanley Cups in a row and President Trophy is the only title that they have yet to win. The initial years were not promising as the Islanders were new to the game and they failed to qualify for the playoffs. 1974-75 season was a good one as they had a group of fine players like Glenn Resch, Denis Potvin and Clark Gillies, the Islanders stood 3rd in the Division and stunned everyone by qualifying not only for the playoffs but also went on to play Conference semifinals losing to Philadelphia Flyer 3-4. This was the dawn of a new era for New York Islanders as they were simply unstoppable, for the next few years they regularly qualified for the playoffs and mostly stood at the top of the division, in 1976-77 and 1978-79 they played the Conference semifinals but lost both times to different rivals.
New York Islanders were simply unstoppable as the early 80’s era simply belonged to them, with help of stunning players like Billy smith and Mike Bossy they made history in 1979-80 by winning their 1st ever Stanley Cup clean sweeping every team that came in their way, in the final they beat their old rivals the Flyers 4-2. The Islanders were in immaculate form and they repeated this performance in 1980-81 by standing 1st in the Division for the 3rd time and winning one more Stanley Cup this time beating Minnesota Stars 4-1. 1981-82 season was no different as they again stood 1st in the Division and brought yet another Stanley Cup to their hometown winning 4-0 from the Vancouver Canucks. In 1982-83 the Islanders stood 2nd in the Division and flew like a falcon to the finals to win their 4th and last Stanley Cup till date beating the Edmonton Oilers 4-0.
1983-84 was pretty good one as well as the Islanders stood 1st in the Division and again had the privilege to play the Stanley Cup final but this time lost to the last season finalists the Oilers 1-4. After this the New York Islanders went into a bad patch and for the next many season they kept on qualifying for the playoffs but normally lost in semifinals. The team clearly was going down and main reason was departure of good players and team also faced financial problems due to fund mismanagement done by team heads. They only reached the Conference final in 1992-93 with some good game by Benoit Hogue, Uwe Krupp and Dave McLlwain, after this the Islanders have been unable to shine as they used to in the past and didn’t qualify for the playoffs in 11 seasons.
In 2007 New York Islanders went into a major rebuilding phase and drafted good player like Kyle Okposo, Mark Streit, Jon Sim and Andrew MacDonald, this was fruitful as they went on to play the Conference quaterfinals but lost to Buffalo Sabres
