The New York Jets started out as the gloriously named Titans of New York in 1960, playing in the AFL. 3 years later, a five-man syndicate had bought the franchise, altering the name, changing the colors & helping a move into the NFL. Leon Hess bought out his partners, holding the owner's post till 2000. The tumult in the ownership ranks was in contrast to a cohesive power-packed display on the field. Quarterback Joe Namath guided the Jets to a memorable whooping of the Colts in 1968, giving them their sole Super Bowl title. He remained the bedrock of much of the team's early success until his retirement in 1977. After an indifferent spell which saw the Jets' form hit rock bottom in 1996, former Patriots & Giants head coach Bill Parcells was employed in a masterstroke which saw the Jets regain a respectable standing. A major reversal of form has followed & fans are buoyed by the promising prospects. The Titans of New York had a brief stint in the Polo Grounds. The Jets moved to Shea Stadium & Giants Stadium before striking a deal with the New York Giants for sharing the new Meadowlands Stadium from 2010 onwards.
Under current General Manager Mike Tannenbaum & Coach Rex Ryan, the Jets have formed a formidable presence on the football circuit. Bill Parcells revolutionized the selection procedure on his move from the Super Bowl-winning Patriots, where he had lamented the lack of control of coaches over personnel decisions. Keyshawn Johnson's swagger & Chad Pennington's wholehearted performances have made them Jets legends, alongside Joe Namath.
