Owners John Kludge & Stuart Subotnick originally changed the name from Empire Soccer Club to the New York MetroStars after the club's formation in 1996. After current Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz took over, the situation hardly improved for the New York/ New Jersey MetroStars, as they were known then. The MetroStars won the international La Manga Cup by defeating Ukrainian club Dynamo Kyiv & Danish team Viking FK, but it was a distraction from the domestic slump at best. Promise was shown with a US Open Cup Final appearance in 2003. Red Bull GmbH took over the ownership in 2006, & immediately a massive overhaul in the name, colors & logo took place. Although the injection of new cash helped bring in European powerhouses Barcelona & Bayern Munich for exhibition matches to boost attendances, the highest point was a tremendous run to the MLS Cup Final in 2008. The team is relocating to the 25,000 capacity Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey, for the 2010 MLS season. Earlier the home turf was shared with the New York Giants at the Giants Stadium.
Richie Williams is the head coach of the team, trying to follow in the footsteps of some local greats such as Bob Bradley & Bruce Arena. The team has acquired international stalwarts such as Donadoni, Matthaus, French World Cup winner Youri Djorkaeff, & prolific former Aston Villa striker & current captain Juan Pablo Angel in a bid to challenge for top honors, but the efforts have not borne fruit thus far.
The team has not won a major domestic trophy, instead stumbling at the final hurdle twice: in the 2003 US Open Cup Final, & 2008 MLS Cup Final. With an international win in the La Manga Cup in 2004, the team did show a desire to excel.
