The history of Norfolk Tides goes back to 1961 when it was called Tidewater Tides and played for South Atlantic League, with Portsmouth’s Lawrence Stadium as its home ground. The team played independently in its first year without any direct affiliation with a major league, till it was offered affiliation with St. Louis Cardinals the next season. In 1963, however, the SAL pulled out of Virginia thus making minor league baseball insecure for the future, in the Hampton Roads region. A local group came forward and suggested an expansion plan to Carolina League, which when undertaken took in two teams, once of which were the Tides. By 1969, New York Mets decided to move their affiliate from the Triple-A International League then called the Jacksonville Sons, to Portsmouth from Florida. The team then took on the title of the Tides, after which it was taken up by the team’s previous owners who continued with the team under the ownership of the Mets. Their first year with Triple-A came to a close with a pennant, when all at the same time, the city of Norfolk and the Mets team came together to have the team’s new home ground built.

The arena also has twenty-four luxury boxes that can hold four hundred people and a full-serving restaurant that can entertain over two hundred people. The ground for the park was broken in 1992, and the team moved into the new stadium the very next year. During this period, many changes were brought about in various ways; in 1992, the franchise was sold by the Mets to a group headed by Ken Young, a Tampa businessman. By the time the team shifted to Harbor Park, it replaced its then current name of Tidewater to that of Norfolk, owing to marketing strategies and political reasons, since Norfolk city had run arranged for the construction of the park with reference to financing and building.

Norfolk Tides and the Mets brought their affiliation to a close following the 2006 season, just when their association of thirty-eight years proved to be the second longest of a Triple-A class level.
