During the early sixties, the team was bought by Irv Kosloff, who moved the team to Philadelphia with an aim to make it commercially successful. During this period, Walter Stalberg came up with the team's new name, and finally it was decided that the team will be called the 76ers after the year of American Declaration of Independence. In the coming years, the media and the team's supporters started referring to the Philadelphia based team as "Sixers."

During mid sixties, the team managed to acquire the celebrated Warriors player Wilt Chamberlain. The arrival of Chamberlain helped Sixers reinforce their grip on the National Basketball Association championship that year. A feat that Sixers achieved by beating the very strong Los Angeles Lakers basketball team also raised their stature even further. In 1966, on the occasion of NBA's 35th anniversary, the Philadelphia 76ers was voted as the best basketball league team.

In late sixties, the Sixers moved to their new home ground, The Spectrum, situated in the heart of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. That season, the team once again fought for the ultimate prize in the world of American basketball, the coveted NBA trophy. The Sixers qualified for the NBA playoffs but failed to win the title. At the end of season, the team management made a crucial mistake of giving away Chamberlain to Los Angeles Lakers in return for three of unknown players. That season, the Sixers beat Los Angeles Lakers four straight games in a row and won the NBA championship once again. The very next season, the team was hit by another downturn, when the team administration decided to trade-off Moses to Washington in return for three completely inexperienced and unknown players. This move had a disastrous effect on team's performance in the playoffs, resulting in their first round defeat at the hands of Milwaukee. For the next ten years, the Philadelphia 76ers were not able to regain their position in the NBA playoffs and consistently lost first round matches to mediocre teams.

The nineties brought even more destruction for the team, and this decade is widely considered to be the dark ages for the Sixers. At the turn of the century, the team under new ownership moved to their new home at the Core States Center in Philadelphia. Following this move, the team made further changes in their lineup acquiring several star players in the process. These sudden changes in the team structure helped the Sixers make a huge come back in the 2001-2002 season. The 2001-2002 season saw 76ers qualify for the NBA finals for the first time since 1983. It was a closely fought battle between two traditional rivals, and this time Lakers managed to be beat the 76ers by just twelve points.

In 2010, the team managed to win the second NBA Draft Pick, beating the Nets, Warriors and Kings. This season brought the Sixers back in the NBA play-offs with an aim to win the NBA title once again.
