The first Harlem Globetrotters game was played at Hinckley, Illinois on 7^th January 1927.In the very next year i.e.1928 there was a dispute in the team due to the issue of bringing back the players who had left the team. This resulted in the formation of a team called Globe Trotters, which was led by Tommy Brookins and it was scheduled to tour Southern Illinois in the same year.

Abe Saperstein actively participated in almost every activity of the team and by 1929 he was touring with his basketball team to Iowa and Illinois. The name given to his team was New York Harlem Globe Trotters. In order to represent the African American culture the name Harlem was decided for the team. Harlem being the center of the American black community at that time very well suited the team and gave them a sense of belonging and togetherness. Many years after its formation, the Globetrotters played their first home match in Harlem in 1968.After establishing their reputation as a talented upcoming team they were joined at first by a star player who belonged to Annawan, Illinois and the second star player was an adept shooter and dribbler and his name was Albert "Runt" Pullins.

Initially the Globetrotters played serious basketball and very extremely competitive. Though they loved to provide entertainment to the audience but never at the cost of their game. They would clown for the audience only after getting a safe lead in the match at hand. In the year 1939 they were invited to participate in the World Professional Basketball Tournament and they accepted the invitation. Due to the teams superb performance they were able to reach the semifinals. There they played against the New York Rens .It was considered to be one of the biggest matches of the tournament as both the teams were very strong and had emerged as one of the greatest all-black professional basketball teams. The Globetrotters were beaten by the Rens and the later ended up winning the tournament. In 1940 Globetrotters leveled the score by beating the Rens in the quarter finals and moved on to beat Chicago Bruins in the finals. They were the winners of the tournament and were acclaimed by many.

The Harlem Globetrotters showed their talent and skill where ever they went. They were successful in beating a premier professional team Minneapolis Lakers led by George Mikan. They won consecutively for two years that was in 1948 and 1949.Their talent and hard work had taken them to the pinnacles of glory. They were able to prove themselves as winners thereby diminishing any stigma attached to them due to their race or color. The Globetrotters were able to beat Lakers in the February of 1948. This win proved to be a hallmark in the history of basket ball. It showed o the world that this all “black team” was in no way inferior or even less talented than any other all “white team”.

Another reason for their being so popular was because of the entertainment they provided along with sports. There came a time when they became known for adding comic routines in their act. Globetrotters acts exhibited extreme skill and coordination. The way in which they were able to maneuver the ball was matchless. This included handling of more than one basket balls at one time, spinning balls on their fingertips and making difficult shots.
