Vanderbilt Commodores are the athletics teams from Vanderbilt University that play from NCAA Division I. The university offers sixteen varsity teams comprising of ten women’s teams and six men’s teams, among which a total of fourteen take part in the Southeastern Conference of which the university is a charter member of. Vanderbilt teams are members of American Lacrosse Conference as well but only with reference to women’s lacrosse. Vanderbilt is the only exception among league schools that does not field any teams in volleyball and softball, though it has talked about adding them in its future sports plan. Vanderbilt Commodores tickets are popular among younger crowds particularly those who are fond of basketball games.
 
Vanderbilt Commodores are known for their tradition of having strong tennis and basketball skills among both men and women teams. The two teams play their home games in Memorial Gym that was built in 1952. The Gym has been noted for its benches’ peculiar location on the baselines, and the advantage of having this venue as its home court has earned the team the nickname of Memorial Magic. Vanderbilt’s recently formed bowling and lacrosse programs for women alongside a baseball program for men has brought them moderate levels of national success. Their football program experienced much success throughout the first half of the Twentieth century after which it has rather struggled continuously. However, in the 2008 football season, the team completed a season successfully for the first time in twenty-five years while it was also the first time in fifty years that the team won experienced a post-season win.  
 
Vanderbilt University, on average has sixty-four undergraduates and the smallest school to be part of the Southeastern Conference. Vanderbilt Commodores have lesser teams than any of their rivals, sometimes not having as much national recognition attained by other school teams such as those of the University of Kentucky or University of Florida.  Currently, the Commodores varsity teams for men comprise of baseball, tennis, golf, football, cross country and basketball. Those for women comprise of basketball, bowling, cross country, golf, indoor track, lacrosse, outdoor track, soccer, tennis, driving and swimming. The Commodores are currently run under the athletic directorship of David Williams II who is the Vice Chancellor of university affairs. In the last few years, the athletic programs of Vanderbilt have experience more success, and the season of 2006-07 proved to be one of its best in athletic history. In fact at one time, seven of its sixteen teams attained the rank of Top Twenty-five of its respective sport areas. Women’s bowling team brought home the NCAA championship, marking the first time the school won a championship ever since the start of NCAA.
 
Vanderbilt Commodores play their football games at the Vanderbilt Stadium which has a seating capacity of over forty-thousand. The stadium was completed in 1922 and was the first venue of the South designated to college football games in particular. Memorial Gymnasium, where the Commodores play their basketball games, was completed in 1952 and can hold a crowd of more than fourteen thousand. Hawkins Field, where the Commodores play baseball, was opened in 2002 with a seating capacity about three thousand and seven hundred.
 
The ‘Commodore’ nickname was given to the athletic teams of Vanderbilt as a way of honoring the nickname already given to Cornelius Vanderbilt, whose fortune was made in shipping. The alumni and students also call these athletic teams the Dores, along with many cheers such as ‘Go Dores!’ and ‘Who ya with?’ Since the term ‘Commodore’ was widely in use for most of the nineteenth century, which is when  Vanderbilt Commodores athletic teams came about, their mascot is mostly called Mr. C, and is often depicted as a naval officer of the late nineteenth century, dressed fully in uniform with cutlass and mutton chops.
