But the constant shedding of players from the club caused a huge damaged as the number of fans also started dropping at the same speed so much so that the Major League Baseball considered repealing the team's franchise after their 2001 season. The year 2002 saw the club being purchased by the Major League Baseball and it started its search for a new location. Some of the relocation sites under the Major League Baseball consideration were Mexico, Washington DC, Northern Virginia, Portland, New Jersey, North Carolina Puerto Rico and Oregon. Later Bud Selig, the Comissioner also added Nevada and Las Vegas to the potential list of the future for the Expos. Although Virginians for Baseball, one of the local groups, became an active contender; Washington DC emerged as a front runner.
Alas on September 29th, 2004, the Major League Baseball (MLB) made an official announcement that the Expos will be moved to Washington before the start of the 2005 season.The same year the law suit was struck down by arbitrators ending the efforts of one of the former owners of the club, Jeffrey Loria to keep the Expos in Montreal. It was then that the club's name was changed to Washington Nationals. This was the first time since 1972 that a relocating team under went a complete name change.
The Nationals hit their first home run on April 4, 2005 and two days later scored their first win against Phillies. On April 14, 2005 the Nationals won their first season immediately after its inception, when the then President of the US, President George W. Bush kept up the tradition of throwing out the ceremonial first pitch, a tradition aging back to 100 years when President William Howard Taft did it for the first time. It was as if the club was set to win it all in 2005 because in interleague play the club led all the National League and recorded a total of 12 wins. There has been no stopping the club since their record win of 2005.
Ted Lerner took over the club ownership in 2006 and did a great deed of hiring a new president, the man behind the 14 division titles run of the Atlanta Braves, Stan Kasten. With the new president came the club's new plans of restructuring the team and bringing out the best in every way possible. The changes made during this time were appreciated by many, the fans and the players alike and rightly so. Owing to the efforts of the new owner and the president the Nationals further improved their record by two additional wins as compared to the previous two years. Since, then, the club has been eyed by many especially the fans as playing enjoyable yet skillful baseball.
The club also has a flagship radio station, the WFED (Federal News Radio) which has quite successfully attracted many fans. Like all the others, the Nationals also have numerous minor affiliates such as the DSL Nationals, Harrisburg Senators, Potomac Nationals, Vermont Lake Monsters, Syracuse Chiefs, Hagerstown Suns and GCL Nationals.
