The sport of professional wrestling has been in and around us in way or the other for centuries. And quite recently, wrestling has grown up to be one of the most watched sports in all across the nation. With recent commercialization of the sport and higher levels of professionalism and athleticism, wrestling now enjoys enormous amounts of fan following and viewership. With regard to professional wrestling scene in United States, World Wrestling Entertainment enjoys unmatched viewership with fans located in different parts of the world. As of the present, the popularity and fame of World Wrestling Entertainment events isn’t contained within the borders of United States, in fact they have spread all over the world. World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) is the biggest there is, when it comes to professional wrestling companies. And the scale of WWE’s massiveness can be estimated by its over thirteen million viewership based in United States only. In addition to U.S, WWE is also broadcasted in over 145 different countries, and its shows are translated into thirty different languages.
WWE, which was known as WWF back then, started getting massive amounts of popularity when Vincent K. McMahon bought the Capitol Wrestling Corporation from his father and rest of the share holders. The name of the company was changed to its present form in 2002 when World Wrestling Federation had a naming dispute with World Wide Fund for Nature, over the initials WWF. So later on, the company’s name was changed to World Wrestling Entertainment. Prior to the change of the name, the show had already created two separate rosters for WWE Raw and WWE Smackdown!
WWE Raw is one of the oldest and most historic shows by WWE. The history WWE Raw goes back to January 11, 1993, when it was broadcasted for the first time and completely changed the way professional wrestling was televised. Before Raw, wrestling matches were taped on sound stages, but the matches of Raw were taped in front of the live audience along with the live camera work. The show was aired live every week from Grand Ballroom at Manhattan Center Studios. The fact the action was presented live to viewers, made the show pretty successful among the wrestling fans. However this was done only once a week. Raw was aired on Monday of each week. During early days, Raw was broadcasted live one week but the next week a taped version of the show was aired.
Starting from 1995 onwards, started having a battle for ratings with WCW’s new Monday night show called WCW Nitro. Since a taped version of Raw was aired on one week, the results of the matches held on the taped version, were being leaked in advance on WCW Nitro. The both show battled for ratings for the next couple of years. However from January 4, 1999, Raw started receiving more ratings and more viewership as compared to WCW Nitro, which led to the rapid decline in the revenue and viewership of WCW. This ultimately led to the sale of WCW to WWF.
During early 2002, WWE went through a brand extension which led to the creation of two separate wrestling promotions or shows. Both of these separate shows had different storylines, wrestlers and authorities. One of those shows remained to be WWE Raw, while the other one was named WWE Smackdown! Since Both the shows had separate storylines, they both started competing with each other from there on. The split in rosters and shows was due to the purchase of ECW and WCW by WWE. Following the brand extension, the wrestlers started wrestling for their specific shows only and a draft lottery started being held every year to refresh the rosters of both shows.
As of the moment, WWE Raw stands as one of the most watched fictional weekly programs. Every week, the show is broadcasted live from different arenas in various cities across the nation.
