Say good-bye to the sad memories of 2010 as Broadway brings its musical adaptation of the hit Green Day album American Idiot to the theatre. There will be fifty shows in all starting from January. If that is not enough, then here is more to add to the excitement of the show. The adaptations will feature the lead vocalist of Green Day, Billie Joe Armstrong who will pay the role of St. Jimmy replacing the original cast member, Tony Vincent.
American Idiot is an album based on a post 9/11 existentialist concept that tells the story of the protagonist, Jesus of Suburbia, who is a desensitized man, grown up on a steady diet of soda pop. He is powerless anti-hero who hates everything and everybody around him, including himself and leaves his town for city. As the story progresses, two more characters are introduced, St. Jimmy and Whatsername. St. Jimmy is a punk rock freedom fighter whereas Whatsername, inspiration from Bikini Kill’s song Rebel Girl, is a ‘mother revolution’ figure and the former’s nemesis. St. Jimmy represents rage, blind rebellion and self destruction. Whatsername represents love based on belief and ethics. Jesus of Suburbia is on the former’s path but wants to adopt the latter. Near the end of the story, St. Jimmy kills himself. Though the resolution of the story can only be understood after having watched the show, what really needs to be understood is that St. Jimmy is actually part of the protagonist and when he dies, so does a part of Jesus of Suburbia. In the last song of the album, Whatsername, Jesus of Suburbia even loses link with Whatsername.
Green Day, the punk rock band came up with this album in 2004. It was their seventh studio album and a departure from the type of music they used to produce. It includes loud guitar sounds. Acoustic guitar- playing accompanies songs throughout the album which combined with drumming produce a percussive sound. The bold concept and even bolder music of the album attained instant success after its release. American Idiot reached No.1 position in nineteen countries including the United States and United Kingdom where it achieved six time platinum status in both the countries. The New York Times praised the album saying that “American Idiot possesses a stimulating energy and a vision of wasted youth that holds us in its grip.” Time magazine called it a ‘masterpiece’ and the Rolling Stone termed it as “a fearless and politically astute rock album, a richly melodic song suite that gives voice to the disenfranchised suburban underclass of Americans.”
To date, it has sold over 14 million copies worldwide and has won numerous awards. It won two Grammys in 2005; one for Best Rock Album and another for Record of the Year for its song, Boulevard of Broken Dreams. Due to the immense popularity of American Idiot, its adaptation to stage seemed a logical conclusion. Its first musical adaptation premiered in September, 2009 at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre. Though it did not do as well as was expected, the sales really picked up when Billie Joe replaced Vincent in October for a few shows as the latter had to attend to certain family matters. Considering this, the producers, of which the Berkeley Repertory Theatre is a part, decided to include Billie Joe in its 2011 production of the musical.
The musical includes some big names. It is a collaboration between Green Day and Tony award winning director Michael Mayer about which Mayer said that, “Collaborating with Billie Joe and the band is a mind-blowing thrill”. This thrill has been transported to stage by the efforts of the cast and crew. The York Times attests to it by calling the musical, "thrilling and emotionally charged, as moving as anything on Broadway!"
