By the time 1927 came around Ethel had cemented her reputation as one of the most gifted stage performers of that era. It was that very same year that she was approached by the famous playwright Zoe Atkins and gave her an offer that wasn’t just a compliment but changed her life forever. The Schubert Organization were making a play titled The Kingdom of God so if Ethel gave her consent to act in it then they would build a theatre as a tribute to her and name it after her as well. It wasn’t an offer to be taken lightly and the biggest reason for that was because it came from The Schuberts. Founded in 1900 The Schubert Organization also known as The Schuberts is a theater production company of the highest order. It has remained at the forefront of theatrical productions since its early days and that it a trend that looks set to continue in the foreseeable future.
When The Schuberts decided to make The Kingdom of God in 1927, a religious play they wanted nothing but the best so their led them to Ethel. So when Zoe put the proposal forward she asked to read the script and once she was done doing that she immediately signed to work for The Schuberts. The Schuberts then started to work on construction the Barrymore theatre and chose Herbert J. Krapp to design it who was among the best architects in the world in that era. Herbert was a specialist in designing theaters so The Schuberts had chosen well. The theater was completed on 20th December, 1928 and The Kingdom of God became the first play to grace the stage at the newly built venue. It was a wonderful moment in theatrical history as Ethel headlined the first ever play to be staged at the Barrymore.
Since then the Barrymore has been home to some of the biggest and the greatest classics of all time. It is now the only theater left standing out of all the venues that were built by The Schuberts as a tribute to their artists.
