Yes, that is correct; the staged version of Brief Encounter is now coming to perform on a stage near you! Ever since Kneehigh Theatre's production of Noel Coward's Brief Encounter got presented, it opened to rave reviews. Fans loved the depiction and presentation of their favorite characters from the sweet tale on to the stage, making it a huge success. Brief Encounter is originally a British film that had been released in 1945. Based on the one-act play Still Life produced in 1936 by Noel Coward, the film is directed by David Lean; whereas, the screenplay is done by the writer/producer Noel Coward himself. The music is given by Sergei Rachmaninoff and the cinematography is done by Robert Krasker.
The story of Brief Encounter is about the societal norms and values of British suburban life. It focuses on a housewife who saw real love as a surprisingly aggressive thing in contrast to the civil and pleasant arrangement of her marriage. The cast of the film includes Celia Johnson, Stanley Holloway, Trevor Howard, and Joyce Carey.
In the year 2008, Emma Rice, Kneehigh's Artistic Director, adapted the stage version of Kneehigh Theatre production, which resulted in becoming a blend of the film and the stage play, including additional musical elements. The theatrical had toured around the UK, performing at different venues in different areas, before premiering at the Haymarket Cinema in London, in February 2008. It was then converted into a theatre for the play. The London production included cast members like Amanda Lawrence, Naomi Frederick, Tamzin Griffin, and Tristan Sturrock in the lead roles. It ran till November 2008 and continued touring the UK again for the following twenty-seven weeks, till the July of 2009. Then in October 2009 came the U.S. premiere. The stage show opened at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, CA, and moved to New York in December 2009. Soon, the adaptation can be seen performing live in other parts of the U.S. too, including Minneapolis.
The show, depicting the life and love stories of three couples are played out in the famous station tearoom, has been said to be quite delightful, as the words and songs of Noel Coward are used to create a breathtaking experience. The Times magazine has called it to be "Wonderfully refreshing. A Delight"; the Daily Telegraph calls it "A First class return to romance"; whereas the Daily Mail has appreciated it in these words: "Give yourselves a treat and go".
