Georges Bizet gave this world quite some operas and compositions to be remembered with. But none of his work outshone as much as his opera named Carmen. The opera differed from the rest of his operas in a sense that is contained, in addition to the traditional arias, some spoken dialogues as well. Although initially the opera didn't garner much of a positive reviews, but gradually the popularity of the opera started to rise. But unfortunately Bizet didn't live long enough to watch his creation flourish. As of the moment it stands as one of the most performed operas of the world ever since it premiered back in 1880s. Not just that, it's also ranked at the #4 spot in the list of top 20 operas in North America. The opera premiered back on March 3, 1875 at the Opera Comique in Paris. At that time it was highly criticized by the critics and the reviews that it received were terrible. In fact it was so badly received that it was decided to draw it out even after its first few performances. However that wasn't practiced until the opera completed first 48 performances. The opera deteriorated so much that by the end of the performances they had to give away free passes to the people to get some audience to watch the opera.

After its closure, the opera opened once again back in the October of 1875 in Vienna. This was the time when its popularity really started to rise up. There in Vienna, it emerged as one of the most critically acclaimed and popular opera, a status that it enjoys even today. Bizet's Opera was not only his last work or art, but also the very last opera of its kind. After Carmen, the genre of opera comique virtually disappeared. So Carmen is also famous for being the only remaining opera of its kind.

The history of the opera goes all the way back to 1873, when Bizet was asked to write an opera that revolves around the plot of Merimee's Novel, by the artistic director of Opera Comique. But the rehearsals didn't start until August 1874, as the directors were unable to find the right actress for the leading role of Carmen. Unfortunately that wasn't the only problem that the opera face before it premiered, as the cast found it difficult to follow Bizet's directions and furthermore Opera Comique's artistic director also didn't like the opera much. Anyhow after a lot of let downs and hurdles, opera finally made it to the theatre; little did anyone know at the time that the opera would go on to become one of the most successful operas of all times.

The opera has won several awards and honorariums over the years as well, which gives you another reason to go give a watch. So grab your cheap Carmen tickets right from our inventory, and get ready for a unique operatic experience.
