The Country Music Association Awards are the Oscars of country music genre. Often called the CMA Awards, these awards are given to those few who have given their hearts and souls to country music. However, ever since 2006, ABC has been televising these awards, live.
Initially the awards were held in Ryman Auditorium, also called the home of Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry. The venue later moved to the Grand Ole Opry House. From Nashville, the award ceremony moved to the Big Apple, New York City’s Madison Square Garden. But ever since 2006, the award ceremony once again moved back to Nashville and the event is now held at Bridgestone Arena. This arena is a state-of-the-art all-purpose venue, which was built with a hefty amount of $144 million. In 2007, it was renovated with millions of dollars, making it even more attractive to its patrons. It has also been nominated four times for the prestigious Pollstar Concert Industry Venue of the Year Award.
The CMA Awards are given out in twelve categories; Musician, Music Video, Musical Event, Song, Album, Single, Vocal Duo, Vocal Group, New Artist, Female Vocalist, Male Vocalist and Entertainer of the Year. It is pertinent to mention here that the peculiar voting system of CMA Awards makes them so special and highly coveted. The reason why this award is prestigious is because the winners aren’t voted in by general public, but instead by the peers of award winning artists. Simply put, a country music artist is judged by another country music artist. It is the CMA’s governing board, the Board of Directors, which picks a winner after three rounds of voting. The voting criteria is stringent and to keep it fair, the voting process is conducted and later certified by Deloitte & Touche LLP, an international accounting firm of great repute.

For example, both Garth Brooks and Kenny Chesney are tied for winning most number of ‘Entertainer of the Year Award’ (both have won 4 times each). Similarly, Martina McBride and Reba McEntire are tied for winning most number of ‘Female Vocalist of the Year Award’ (both have won this award on 4 occasions). There is once again a tie between Vince Gill and George Strait for winning most Male Vocalist of the Year Award. Both have won this award 5 times each.
