Coppelia is a classical ballet that is considered to be among the most celebrated of the genre. It was originally choreographed by Arthur Saint Leon, who intended it for a ballet libretto by Charles Nuitter and Saint Leon with music rendered by Leo Delibes. Its earliest phase of success was interrupted due to the Franco-Prussian War, and the ensuing siege of Paris that actually led to the death of Bozzacchi on her seventeenth birthday. However, the ballet eventually came to be counted among the most performed shows at Opera Garnier. Now, it is being revived by Bolshoi Ballet, ranked among the top ballet companies of the world, which had taken upon itself to present this tale. Coppelia centers round the mysterious and charismatic character of the same name who is believed to be a daughter to the toy-making recluse known as Coppelius. She is often seen sitting on her father’s balcony, appearing oblivious to the world beneath and around her. Her passionate neighbor Swanilda, is overwhelmed and angered at Coppelia’s attitude and is taken aback with a storm of indignity when she catches her fiancé Franz, taking more than usual interest in her rival neighbor. Swanilda, flaring with rage breaks into Coppelius’s home in order to finally confront her rival, when it dawns on her that Coppelia is not what she always imagined.
In 1974, Coppelia was produced by New York City Ballet in which it was choreographed by George Balanchine, in assistance with Alexander Danilova, an artist who had already acted the title role several times in her dancing career. She choreographed the show in its third act. Balanchine introduced new choreography for the third act, for czardas, mazurka and for the variation of Frantz in the first act. The role Swanilda was performed by Patricia McBride and Helgi Tomasson danced as Franz. Dr. Coppelius was portrayed by Shaun O’Brian. The famous story has also featured in a Danish film titled Ballerina, which was show in the US in two parts in 1966, on the Wonderful World of Color on Walt Disney. It was later theatrically released in Europe. The lead role was played by dancer Kristen Simone. In 1968, another movie called The Fantastic World of Dr. Coppelius was released. Its Spanish production which included the orchestra and ballet company of Gran Teatro del Liceo from Barcelona .
The musical score of Coppelia involves a full set orchestra since the ballet requires a harp, flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, and a brass set of several horns, valved cornets, trumpets, trombones and tubas.
