Das Rheingold is a great spectacle composed by Richard Wagner. It is set in the legendary times consisting of three realms: the underworld, the earth's surface and the cloudy heights. The Opera begins with three Rhine Maidens playing together. A Nibelung dwarf appears and tries to woo the maidens. The trio, however, pokes fun at him which ignites his anger. Later, Alberich learns that the Maidens are guarding Rhine gold. Upon realizing that whoever gets the Rhine gold and renounces love will rule the world, Alberich curses love and seizes the gold. He returns and makes the Rhine Maidens to run in despair.
The second scene appears with Wotan, the ruler of the Gods. He is shown asleep with his wife Fricka on a mountain. Fricka awakes and is taken aback seeing a huge castle in front of them. She wakes Wotan who upon seeing the castle realizes that their new home has been completed. The completion of the Castle costs Wotan and Fricka offering of Fricka's sister, Freia, to the giants Fafner and Fasolt. Freia is the goddess symbolizing for youth, beauty and feminine love.
To defend Freia arrive her brothers: Froh - the god of spring and Donner - the god of thunder. But, Wotan tries to stall them. He waits for Loge, a Wotan's servant, to show up. When Loge eventually returns, he presents a discouraging report. He has come across only one man who's willing to give up love for something else.
To their disappointment - the Gods begin to age and weaken. It was only Freia's golden apples which were keeping the Gods eternally young. Wotan and acquaintances must win Freia back. He reaches the conclusion by sending Loge down into the earth. Loge embarks on the mission to get the Rhine Ring back. When they reach Nibeheim, they learn about the misery of the Nibelungs. Alberich is enslaving the Nibelung dwarves while his brother, Mime, is creating a magic helmet called the Tarhelm.
A dialogue takes place between the two and Mime. Mime tells Wotan and Loge about Alberich's aims of conquering the world. The two plans to meet Wotan and takes control of him. They play a trick through which Alberich is transformed into a toad. While he is a toad, Wotan quickly seizes him. Alberich is taken to the surface where he's forced to exchange his wealth for his freedom...will he give up his wealth? Will Freia be released?
