It was debuted in 1949, on Broadway where it was staged seven hundred and forty-two times, while being revived four times in the ensuing years. It is being staged yet again by a new production under the directorship of eight-time winner of Tony Award Mike Nichols, while starring Academy Award winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman playing Willy Loman, Andrew Garfield from The Social Network portraying Biff Loman in his first ever Broadway performance and Obie Award-winner Linda Emond playing Linda Loman.  Various productions of this drama have won many awards for the years including Tony Awards, Drama Desk Awards, and New York Drama Critics Awards. It is no surprise that Death of a Salesman tickets have become the lingering talk of town among drama fans who know this to be an experience not to be missed.

The earliest Broadway production of Death of a Salesman was staged under producer Kermit Bloomgarden and was opened in February 1949 at Morosco Theatre. After running many hundreds of performances it closed in the November of the following year. In this original performance the character of Linda was played by Mildred Dunnock, Willy Loman by Lee J. Cobb, Happy by Cameron Mitchell and Biff by Arthur Kennedy. In the later performances of this production, the character of Willy Loman was portrayed by Gene Lockhart and Albert Dekker. The play won a few Tony Awards in the categories of Best Play, Best Scenic Deisgn to Jo Mielziner, Director to Elia Kazan, and Author to Arthur Miller, while an award was given to the Dramatic production itself.  Besides winning a Pulitzer, Death of a Salesman also received a New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award in the category of Best Play.

Death of a Salesman has seen four revivals on Broadway with its first ever revival in 1975 when it was staged in the Square Theatre at the Circle, and ran seventy-one times with George C. Scott playing the character of Willy Loman. A second revival came in 1984, being staged at Broadhurst Theatre where the protagonist was played by Dustin Hoffman. The show ran for ninety-seven performances, and in the form of a return-engagement, its production was opened again a few months later, running as many as eighty-eight times. This production took home a Tony Award for Best Revival while it also won a Drama Desk Award in the category of Outstanding Revival. The third revival took place in 1999 being staged at Eugene O’ Neil Theatre where it was performed two hundred and seventy-four times, starring Brian Dennehy as Willy. The production was recorded and filmed and won Tony Awards for Best Featured Actress, Best Direction, Best Actor and Best Revival. A fourth revival began in 2012 with a planned run for sixteen weeks. In 2010, a Weston Playhouse production of Weston in Vermont, toured around many venues in New England.

Death of a Salesman focuses on one man’s failure in attaining the American Dream, and looks at how he has slowly moved into a delusional world that has not only destroyed him but has also had repercussion on his family. It also questions the reality of such a dream and what happiness is. The American culture is brought under scrutiny by the portrayal of Willy Loman, his addicted wife who would much rather take refuge in her delusions and his two sons who are yet to ‘find themselves’.  This two hour long play is an experience that is not only dramatic, culturally-questioning but also existential to its very core. Get in line for Death of a Salesman tickets and experience the legend of Arthur Miller.
