His broadcasting style could never be matched with that of anyone else, and this was the reason why a huge public outrage poured in the 1990’s. True was the fact and it showed to the Tigers that they could not find somebody better than William Earnest Harwell.
 
After a few changes in the Tigers’ management, they came to know the public resentments and of course the lack of the lead of their team, Ernie and so he was brought back to become the voice of the Tigers in the mid 90s. For the latter half of the 90s, Harwell called nearly all the television based broadcasts for the team and continued to offer full time responsibilities for radio broadcast for the Tigers. His role continued until 2002 which was when he announced that he would retire. It was the spring training of the year 2002 that the Final Broadcast by Ernie came on national network.
 
Following the official retirement from the Tigers, he did a number of broadcasts on television for baseball games. In fact, various sports channels actually invited him in honor and respect for covering major events. His commentary was always looked forward by the public and those fans that had been following him through the years. Most of his call outs and conversations were looked out for.
