Fiddler on the Roof is one of the first musicals to defy Broadway's ever-growing commercial popularity. Jerry Bock composed the music, Sheldon Harnick wrote the lyrics, and Joseph Stein was the playwright of Fiddler On the Roof. The musical is based on Tevye and his Daughters and carries epic tales by Sholem Aleichem. It deals with such sensitive issues as persecution, poverty, and efforts to maintain a balance between family and religious traditions in the midst of a chaotic environment.

Tevy is a dairyman and a strong follower of religious and family traditions. He sticks himself with traditions which keep the outside world at bay. At the same time, he's shown a father of five girls who he brings up them in a traditional environment of Anatevka. Anatevka is a small Jewish village in Russia. Despite attempting to preserve his family traditions and religious beliefs - outside influences, however, encroach upon Tevy's daughters' lives. His 3 older daughters choose husbands for themselves by going away from their religious customs. Tevy's eldest daughter, Tzeitel, wants to marry a poor tailor but his father has chosen a middle-aged butcher for her.

Tzeitel begs Tevy to let her marry her beloved. Tevy is in a fix as to what to choose between family traditions and his own daughter's happiness. Following the path of the eldest sister, the other two older daughters add more to Tevy's misery. s In the meantime, shown are some dangerous forces which terrorize the very life of Antevka, Tevy is trying to preserve. With the proclamation of Tsar that forces the Jews to leave their village, Tevy must cope with that. Fiddler on the Roof brings Jewison's attention into the limelight where great care is taken to depict Jewish traditions as closer to reality as possible.
