Country music has been one of the most striking forms of music with its simple chord progressions; plain but unforgettable choruses and melodies; the story-telling lyrics; and mellifluous use of string instruments such as guitars, harmonicas, the violin, banjos and fiddles. There is no better stage for country music to unleash its sweetness then The Grand Ole Opry – which has been one of the greatest compliments to Country music since the latter emerged in early 20th century.
The Grand Ole Opry is one of the premier stage concerts for country music held weekly in Nashville, Tennessee. Committed to promote country music and celebrate its glorious history, the Grand Ole Opry stages an exciting mix of legends and contemporary chart-topping artists performing country, gospel, bluegrass, folk, and comic skits and performances. Over the years, the concert has featured some of the biggest names in country music and is considered an American icon attracting thousands of visitants from across the globe and millions of internet and radio listeners. Widely considered as the country music’s most famous stage, the Opry has been dubbed ‘the home of American music’ and the concert that rendered the country music popular.
The Grand Ole Opry was started in late 1925 in a radio studio by George D. Hay, the most popular radio announcer in the US. Hay’s collaboration with Uncle Jimmy Thompson resulted in a program called WSM Barn Dance, which would go on to become The Grand Ole Opry in later years. During its early years, the show regularly featured the Crook Brothers, Possum Hunters, the Binkley Brothers' Dixie Clodhoppers, the Fruit Jar Drinkers, Fiddlin' Arthur Smith, Sid Harkreader, Uncle Dave Macon, the Gully Jumpers and Deford Bailey. In 1926, the show got its first real star, the banjo player Uncle Dave Macon. Beginning in the ‘30s, the Barn Dance began employing more professionals and expanded to four hours. The show received a national debut on NBC Radio in 1939. Following this, The Grand Ole Opry shifted to the Ryman Auditorium, its permanent home since 1943. Over the years, the show has come to be one of the longest-running radio broadcasts in history.
The Grand Ole Opry is broadcasted live at 7:00 PM Central Time on WSM-AM every Saturday night. There are other similar programs that get aired on different nights of the week such as the Friday Night Opry, which is broadcast live on Friday nights and Tuesday Night Opry which is aired live from March through December every year. Another similar program, the Wednesday Night Opry was in the pipeline for a summer 2010 debut but was abandoned. The concert is also broadcast live on The Roadhouse. Besides, a shortened radio program, America's Opry Weekend, is sold to radio stations around the United States and is also streamed live on WSM's website.
Apart from radio broadcasts, performances on The Grand Ole Opry were televised live by PBS from 1978 to 1981. The Nashville Network started to broadcast the edited 30-minute episodes of the program under the title Grand Ole Opry Live; the program expanded to 60 minutes when it moved to Country Music Television in 2001, followed by Great American Country network in 2003.
The Grand Ole Opry membership is considered as the crowning achievement in the country music. Being at country music's heart, the Opry membership represents the most enduring hall of fame and renders the tag of country music elites to its members. Once the Opry membership is earned, it must be preserved throughout the artist's career. In one way or the other, the Opry performers helped shape American country music through their music and repertoire. Over the years, hundreds of The Grand Ole Opry members, including legends, superstars and emerging artists, have performed for millions of keen ears. Legends of country music such as Minnie Pearl, the Carter family, Hank Williams, Ernest Tubb, Patsy Cline, Kitty Wells, Bill Monroe and Roy Acuff were the regular features of the Opry. Recent times have seen the Opry stage such contemporary artists as Carrie Underwood, Dolly Parton, Brad Paisley, Reba McEntire, the Dixie Chicks and Garth Brooks.
