For twenty-three years, Conte worked as the company’s director, in which time he developed contact with well-known contemporary choreographers from the likes of Lynne Taylor-Corbett, Twyla Tharp, Jiri Kylian, Nacho Duato, Daniel Ezralow and Margo Sappington, who all assisted in shaping the repertoire of Hubbard Street.
Today Hubbard Street Dance Chicago comprises of seventeen dancers. It is one among the few American dance organizations that perform all round the year, at dance venues at home and abroad while it also presents at universities through their dance programs. Whereas most dance companies are choreographed by a single artist, Hubbard Street is the collective effort of several choreographers, all of whom bring in their respective distinct style, which in turn contributes to the company’s wide range of repertory. This dancing company is known to have presented and commissioned as many as two hundred acquired and newly designed dances all though its history. Moreover, Hubbard Street has also started offering what it terms a Summer Intensive, which is a training program in ballet and modern dance techniques, and alongside provides lectures on dance history, repertoire rehearsals, and makes wellness and health presentations for aspiring professional dancers.
In year 2000, Jim Vincent was appointed as the Artistic Director of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, who worked at furthering and expanding the company’s repertoire and programming. He took initiatives which are now recognized as the very staples of the dancing company, such as Choreography Workshop known as Inside/Out, in which dancers are supposed to choreograph original moves for their peers; the Choreographic Fellowship is another one of Vincent’s introductions, in which choreographers from inside the company are identified and their skills developed further for them to eventually emerge on the company’s front. Dancers from the likes of Robyn Mineko Williams and Alejandro Cerrudo, and Terence Marling who is now the Rehearsal Director, have all contributed in developing works for Hubbard Street. Penny Saunders, another dancer, choreographed a piece for the company through the yearly held National Choreography Competition by Hubbard Street.
In 2009, Glenn Edgerton was appointed as the new Artistic Director of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, after being Associate Artistic Director for quite some time. He announced Alejandro Cerrudo as the first Resident Choreographer of Hubbard Street, following which Cerrudo contributed ten new works to the company. Edgerton, has taken the company to new heights by securing new commissions as well as repertoire hits from the most notable master choreographers such as Sharon Eyal, Aszure Barton, Victor Quijada, Ohad Naharin, Twyla Tharp, William Forsythe, Nacho Duato and Jiri Kylian.
