La Boheme is an opera, the work of the legendary Giacomo Puccini. It is the fourth amongst his many operas and was preceded by Manon Lescaut, Edgar and Le Villi. It was released in 1896 and is accompanied by an Italian libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica. It is based upon Henri Murger’s Scenes de la vie de boheme and its world premiere occurred at the Teatro Regio in Turin. The debut performance was conducted by Arturo Toscanini, then at the early stages of his career as a famous conductor. Today, La Boheme is one of the best known operas in the world and a permanent part of the Italian opera repertory. It is also one of the most played Italian operas in the world and statistically, the Fourth Most Performed Opera Worldwide according to data collected by Operabase. As such, for fans of excellent opera, this is definitely a must see and listen live with La Boheme tickets in hand.

One of the most historical performances of La Boheme occurred when it was conducted live on radio alongside the NBC Symphony Orchestra by Arturo Toscanini. Not only was this a groundbreaking achievement, it is also today regarded as the only recording of an opera by Giacomo Puccini conducted by its original conductor. During his life, Giacomo Puccini worked on many more operas; Tosca followed up in 1900, then Madama Butterfly in 1904, La fanciulla del West in 1910, La rondine in 1917, the three part Il Trittico in 1918 and his last work, Turandot which was completed by Alfano in 1926. Amongst all of these operas, La Boheme is regarded as one of the best and thus its international fame is no surprise. Its story is also unique and is based upon that described in Henri Murger’s work of fiction.

This is story that revolves around a group of vignettes playing young bohemians living in Paris’s Latin Quarter during the eighteen forties. The novel itself has no single plot but the opera’s story follows the relationship between two of the novel’s characters, Mimi and Rodolfo. One of the differences between the novel and the opera is that it combines two characters from the book, Francine and Mimi, into one. Moreover, two out of the four acts are creations original to the libretto and not found in the novel. Thus, La Boheme’s libretto is also original and adapted from the novel.

La Boheme was a very successful opera. Soon after its debut, it had become popular in Italy and a number of productions were soon up and running, performed by a number of companies including The Teatro di San Carlo, The Teatro Comunale di Bologna and La Scala features famous actors and actresses including Antonio Magini-Coletti, Camilla Pasini and Solomiya Krushelnystka. In the UK, the opera debuted in 1897 at the Theatre Royal in Manchester. This performance featured Alice Etsy playing the role of Mimi and William Paull playing the role of Marcello and occurred in 1897. The same year, it was staged in Los Angeles and then in 1898, it debuted in New York City.

La Boheme features various instrumental pieces in its musical score; flute, piccolo, clarinet, horns, timpani, snare drums, violin and cello as just some of them. One of the opera’s recordings that occurred in 1973under Sir Georg Solti as the conductor with Montserrat Caballe playing Mimi and Placido Domingo playing Rodolfo won the Grammy Award in the Best Opera Recording category.

Aside from the Grammy Award, La Boheme has won many other awards including the Tony Award, Broadway Award and the Laurence Olivier Award. These performances have been so popular that La Boheme tickets sold out for two seasons during the West End performance of the opera at the Soho Theatre and eight performances were held a week on Broadway.
