La Traviata is an opera by Giuseppe Verdi. It is in three acts and is based on the 1848's published novel - La dame aux Camelias by Alexandre Dumas, fils, and consists of an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave. The opera was initially titled Violetta, after the lead character, but was then renamed as "La traviata", which literally means 'The Woman Who Strayed', and metaphorically refers to 'The Fallen Woman'. The opera is set in the Jazz Age and thus it perfectly suits the whole plot of the tale.
Opening on March 6, in 1853, at La Fenice, Venice, Italy, La Traviata did not turn out to be a big success, rather a complete letdown. This was mainly because of the singers, as the soprano could not really understand Verdi's music, and could not present it the way it should have been. A few revisions in Acts 2 and 3 were made respectively and the opera was presented in Venice again. The same revised version was then first presented at Her Majesty's Theatre in London and then premiered in New York in 1856.
The opera tells a tale about an escort - Violetta Valery, who lives in Paris. The young woman cannot be easily pleased. From a very young age, she has been seeing a lot in life and now wants all the material wealth and wants to earn a luxurious living. When the handsome Alfredo enters the scene, she falls in love with him. To lead a happy life together with her lover, Violetta sacrifices everything for him, but, in spite all this, Alfredo's father does not approve of this relationship and their love story is doomed.
The title role is shared by the spectacular singing actresses Anna Netrebko and Elizabeth Futral, and also the rising star Ailyn Perez. The wonderfully melodious and emotionally evocative score conducted by Donald Runnicles. La Traviata, till date, has been widely critically acclaimed as a production and it has become an immensely popular and an important feature in the world of entertainment. It stands third on list of the 20 most-performed operas in North America of the Opera America.
