Even after being released from the jail, Valjean's miseries do not come to an end, as he is relentlessly chased by the fanatic police inspector, called Javert, for breaking his parole. By the end of the show, the police inspector's fixation leads the two - Valjean and Javert, to a dangerous quarrel in the sewers of Paris, from which only one of them will get a chance to walk out on.
Originally, Les Miserabes had been released as a concept album. The first musical stage adaptation of Les Miserables was presented at a Paris sports arena in 1980. It received instant success from the French audience, and opened at the RSC's Barbicon Theatre in London, during 1985. The musical's continuing success led to its opening in New York only two years later, at the Broadway Theatre, while including the original Valjean, Colm Wilkinson, who re-presented his critically acclaimed performance.
The entire musical includes no spoken dialogue, and is through-sung. The score of the musical has earned the Tony Awards, and the most popular song of the entire production can said to be 'Dreamed a Dream', which is sung in the in the first act, as a solo by the character of Fantine. Les Miserables is regarded as one of the most renowned and performed musicals worldwide. Upon celebrating its 21st anniversary (Oct. 8, 2006) at London's West End, the musical turned into the longest-running West End musical in history, and reached 9,500 performances. Till date, the production continues at London's Queen's Theatre.
