The popular opera - Love And Other Demons, established on the Nobel-prizewinner Gabriel Garcia Marquez's 1994 novella, Of Love and Other Demons, is in two acts. The opera has been composed by Peter Eotvos, and the libretto is written by the Kornel Hamvai; both, the author and the composer, are Hungarian. Peter Eotvos, one of the most widely commissioned opera composers in Europe, composed the opera as a result of a commission by Glyndebourne and the BBC. This Glyndebourne commission became the original foremost significant production of any of his operas in the UK. The opera premiered at the Glyndebourne Festival, on 10 August 2008. This was a performance that lasted 3 hours 50 minutes, and included a 1 hour 20 minutes break. It was only two months later, on October 11, 2008, that the opera got broadcast in full on BBC Radio 3.
Love And Other Demons tells a story of forbidden love and is set in the tropical, yet magical world of 18th century Colombia, harking back the colonial era in Spanish American history. It is about a 12 year old girl, Maria, who is living with her neglecting farther. Due to this uncaring behavior of her father, Maria prefers being with her slaves and servants. Upon an eclipse of the sun, she gets bit by a dog who is suffering from rabies. She suffers no reaction; nonetheless, she is brought to a convent where Father Delaura, a 36 year old priest, is thought to take care of her, and is supposed to get free of her of demons but he falls in love with her. When this is brought to notice, Maria is removed from the convent and now, the bishop, himself, will exorcise her demons. However, she dies in the course.
The opera has a framework of a play that is infused with music. A consistent use of multiple languages is realized with different levels of narration and action in the story, which have their own characteristic language - Delaura uses Spanish whenever he converses with a Sierva touch about personal feelings; the noblemen use English as the 'everyday language'; Latin is the language of the church rites; and the slaves use Yoruba as their 'secret' language.
