Newsies The Musical is a crowd-pleasing musical by Disney Theatrical Productions. The play takes its inspiration from the film Newsies of 1992. The film itself was based on the actual 1899 Newsboys Strike in the city of New York. The show’s music has been given by Alan Menken; the lyrics are by Jack Feldman, while Harvey Fierstein wrote the book.

The musical opened at the Paper Mill Playhouse in the Millburn area of New Jersey in September 2011. It was directed by Jeff Calhoun and choreographed by Christopher Gatelli. Additionally, the play consists of song numbers from the film, including some new ones. The tracks "High Times Hard Times" and "My Lovey Dovey Baby" were not included in the stage version. The Paper Mill Playhouse production got numerous promising reviews.

The show opened in Broadway this year at the Nederlander Theatre, and it cost about five million dollars to stage it. It began as a limited edition in March but then received extension till August 19th, just after the very 1st preview. In May this year, announcement was made by Disney that Newsies was now going to be an open-ended show. So now, for all our awaiting fans, we have Newsies The Musical tickets available on our website!

Newsies is about a tale of the 1899 Newsboys Strike in the city of New York. Newsboy, Jack Kelly sells newspapers for Joseph Pulitzer’s paper, called the “New York World”. David Jacobs temporarily leaves his school and joins Newsies to assist his family, while his dad is unable to work due to a broken limb. Shortly after that, the newspaper price to the newsboys gets raised by ten cents for every hundred papers, which is a combined decision by William Randolph and Joseph Pulitzer. Feeling that they will not be able to handle the additional charge, Jack Kelly, along with the help of David Jacobs, arranges a strike. Jack Kelly, as a protagonist, faces difficulties owing to his past life, as he develops an integral friendship with David Jacobs and his family-members. On this venture, the boys get helped by Bryan Denton who is a newspaper reporter, as well as by a vaudeville performer called Medda. On the other hand, Snyder custodian of “The Refuge”, the juvenile detention center and Pulitzer hinder stand as an obstruction for the newsboys.

The cast members in the Broadway production include Jeremy Jordan as Jack Kelly, John Dossett playing the newspaper mogul Joseph Pulitzer and Kara Lindsay playing Katherine Plumber. Also, Ben Fankhauser plays Davey, Capathia Jenkins plays Medda Larkin, Andrew Keenan-Bolger plays Crutchie and Matthew Schechter and Lewis Grosso, both share the character of Les.

The recording with the Broadway cast was launched on iTunes in April this year by the Ghostlight Records, while the CD got released in May. For the Broadway production, 6 songs were added, including 3 freshly written song numbers since the production in Paper Mill. The new tracks are named “Something to Believe In”, “The Bottom Line” and “That's Rich”.

So the upcoming Newsies The Musical shows will be held at the Nederlander Theatre. The theatre at 208 West 41st Street in New York City is a venue with seating capacity of 1,232. It is actually 1 of the nine Broadway theatres by the Nederlander Organization; whose legacy started with David Tobias Nederlander, after whom the theatre got named. A number of plays have been held at the venue, including Edmond Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac, Shakespeare’s King Lear and Julius Caesar, Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Tony Award-winning play Rent and Noel Coward’s Private Lives. Lena Home secured a Tony Award in 1981 for her spectacular performance at the Nederlander theatre in her play Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music. Additionally, Newsies The Musical attained the box-office record for the theatre. The musical played to capacity of 101% and earned $1,024,516.60 for 8 shows, the week closing April 15th 2012.
