Of Mice and Men is a play based on a novella by Nobel Prize-winning writer John Steinbeck. Of Mice and Men marks the first time Steinbeck wrote a novel-play. It comprises of three acts with each act consisting of two chapters, such that it can be read as a novel while at the same time it carried scripts so that it could be acted out in a play. Steinbeck’s intention in giving it such a form was that the story may as well have the benefit of being performed straightaway from its original line, while at the same time its original lines are written such that they form a novel’s narrative. The author initially called the story Something That Happened with reference to the plot’s nature of a tragedy occurring on its own without having to blame the incident on any individual. However, Steinbeck felt compelled to rename it when he came across Robert Burns’ To a Mouse poem, the subject of which is the narrator’s regret in unknowingly destroying a mouse’s home while he was only plowing his field.
The earliest stage production of the play Of Mice and Men was produced and directed by Sam H. Harris and George S. Kaufman, respectively. The play opened in November 1937 on Broadway in the well-known Music Box Theatre, and ran for more than two hundred times with Broderick Crawford playing the character of Lennie and Wallace Ford playing George. The character of Crooks was played by Leigh Whipper who was the earliest ever African-American to join the Actors’ Equity Association. He played his role again in the film version of 1939. In 1938, the New York Drama Critics’ Circle selected the production for an award in the category of Best Play. The then famous actress Pamela Blair performed role of Curley’s wife. In 1970, an opera was written by Carlisle Floyd that was based on the same novel. The only difference between the original book and the opera version is that the opera presents the character of The Ballad Singer, which is not in Steinbeck’s novel.

It was staged again at Stageworks Theatre under director Alan Cohen, with James Kermac as George and Christopher Brand as Lennie.
