The Radio City Christmas Spectacular is a spectacular stage show especially around the Christmas time. The show was first presented in New York City in 1933 and it still continues to run to date. The big success of the show owes to its popularity amongst audience of all ages. It is presented at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City. The show features more than 140 flashy performers, glittering costumes and extensive sets. The show also has an original musical score. It is a major magnet for families has become more of a Christmas tradition like the turkey tradition on Thanks Giving which is why more than a couple of million people watch the show every season.
The idea of the presenting the show was first conceived in early 1900s but it was brought to life only in 1933. The first show was presented in the Music Hall on 21st December along with the latest fancy Hollywood flicks which included Flying Down to Rio and RKO. The first show ran for 2 weeks. This show was produced by Leon Leonidoff. The show features the dancing divas called the Rocketts who performed on spectacular compositions performed by the Emo Rapee and the Radio City Symphony. Ever since its inception, there has never been a single break in the shows.
In 1979, the show had a burgeoning reputation which no longer needed the cushioning or support of any movies so the Music Hall ceased all the movie shows which used to run along with this stage show and with that Christmas Spectacular was the solo star of The Radio City Music Hall in New York. The ever increasing popularity of the 90 minute show elicited another great project in the form of a tour. So in 1994 the show began its first tour with lasted till 2003. This tour was so popular that another tour was planned for 2008 which is currently underway.
The Radio City Rocketts are still the star performers of the show and the show opens with their super performance called 'Ring Out Those Bells'. Santa Claus takes the stage even before the first performance is over. Once the song finished Rockettes fly away. The next whole act is more like a 3-D movie which the audience enjoys with their special 3-D glasses. The show ends with the spectacular performance on 'Joy to the World'. The cast reappears on the stage one last time to sing 'Let Christmas Shine' one last time and the curtain drops.
