When the Ringling Brother founded their circus in 1884 by the name of The Ringling Brothers Circus, they had every intention of making it one of the biggest circus acts not just in the United States of American but the rest of the world as well. Before Ringlings acquired the Barnum & Bailey Circus, it belonged to James Anthony Bailey and P T Barnum. The Ringlings ran the two circuses separately for sometime then finally merged them in 1919. There were a total of 7 Ringling brothers, 5 of whom joined the circus business and began their efforts in 1884. They were all very hard working and did not shy off their responsibility towards their business.

When they began their circus, there were numerous small circuses working their way around from town to town. Barnum & Bailey at that time were at the apex of their popularity whereas The Ringling brothers were having their humble beginning. They used to tour town after town, carrying their circus only in a small caravans which were drawn by mules. But their hard work and determination soon put their humble beginnings behind them and their popularity shot up. This enabled them to travel around in train, this subsequently facilitated larger shows in lesser time. The best thing about this circus which was a major contributing factor to their ever increasing fame was their honest attitude. They soon won the trust of the people when they realized that the purpose of the circus was not make money but rather entertain people.

The other thing which set the Ringling Circus apart from rest of the circuses was the fact that they did not allow for any ticket seller to short charge customers. They always discouraged unfair dealers and prohibited games of chances like Three Card Monte and other shell games where customers had more chances of losing than winning.
