Before being famous as an opera, Salome originally made its first appearance as a French Play back in 1891 and was later transformed to an English Play after being translated into English by Oscar Wilde. In 1896, the play was staged for the first time in Paris, although its rehearsals and tryouts began in 1892 in London but due to ban issued by Lord Chamberlain against the depiction of Biblical Characters, the production of the play was put to an end. Later in 1906 the play was staged privately at the King's Hall, Covent Garden; however later after the ban was lifted the play was once again put up for its public performance in England in 1931 at the Savoy Theatre.

Salome underwent a makeover and later emerged as an Opera by Richard Strauss which was based on the German Translation of the play by Hedwig Lachmann. The opera premiered in Dresden on December 9, 1905 at the Hofoper. Also by the time the world saw Salome the Opera by Richard Strauss, Antoine Mariotte also wrote the opera on the Libretto, although his version of the opera emerged few years later. This was mainly due to the fact that Mariotte didn't obtained the permission that was required from the Wilde's publisher before staging his version of the opera, although he was done with the music and everything. Mariotte's version of the opera was staged for the first time on October 30, 1908 at the Grand Theatre de Lyon.

Also based upon the opera, several movies were also released over the years, which achieved fair amount of exposure altogether. The opera musically tells the Biblical tale of Dance of the Seven Veils and the death of John the Baptist. Salome is famous for featuring the dance of the Seven Veils, and that specific part has made it one of the most sensational operas of all times. The opera artistically tells the tale by means of its excellently composed music, along with its outstanding way of deliverance. Richard Strauss beautifully composed the short bits of melodies and gave them the symbolic meanings that help the story all along. Strauss employs the system of leitmotifs in his version of the opera, which lets the listener give out their own interpretation of the opera thanks to the ambiguity and broad meanings that it gives out.

The leading role of Salome is a character bearing high volume, stamina and categorizes itself as a true dramatic soprano. Which is why getting a female actor for this role has been extremely difficult.

After several years of performances, Salome returns once again with its performances that are scheduled for this year.
