When both Shrek and Donkey reach Farquaad’s palace they realized that they were standing in the middle of a tournament. The winner of the tournament would have the honor of rescuing Princess Fiona from a castle that is surrounded by hot lava and a fire breathing Dragon. But the surprising part is that the one who rescues the princess will not marry her rather he will rescue her for Fraquaad so that he can marry her in order to become the real king .Shrek decides to take part in it and beats the knight very easily with the help of Donkey. Farquaad agrees to remove the fairy tale creatures from his swamp if he is able to bring Fiona to him safely.
Shrek and Donkey split up after reaching the castle so that they can find Fiona quickly. Donkey on his way meets the Dragon and gets to know that it’s a female. Dragon after listening to Donkey develops a liking for him and takes him into her chamber. On the other hand Shrek finds Fiona and she is disappointed to see that he is not at all romantic and above all he is an ogre. They find Donkey and take him away from the Dragons chamber. This irritates the Dragon very much and she chases them out of the castle. On their way towards Farquaads castle both Fiona and Shrek realize that they have a lot in common and start falling in love with eachother.At night she refuses to sleep with them and takes shelter in a nearby cave.
The next night Fiona again sleeps away from Shrek and Donkey, in a windmill. Donkey hears weird noises coming from the windmill and on reaching there he comes to know that Fiona had changed into an ogress. She tells him that she was cursed as a child and due to the curse she turns into an ogress every night and this was the reason why she was locked away in the castle. The only thing that could finish this curse forever was a kiss from her true love. Shrek who was planning to confess his love for her over hears the conversation and comes to know that Fiona hates herself when she turns into an ogress. Shrek, disappointed, takes Fiona to Farquaad and goes back to his swamp and realizes how much he misses her. Later with the help of the Dragon and Donkey he interrupts the wedding of Fiona with Farquaad and as the sun sets Fiona turns into an ogress. Disgusted, Farquaad, orders to kill Shrek and put Fiona into prison. Dragon kills Farquaad and Shrek and Fiona confess their love and kiss each other. The curse is broken and she has turned into an ogress. They both get married and leave for their honeymoon.
