Shubert Theatre in Connecticut saw the premiere of South Pacific on 7th March, 1949. The show's second tour to Boston was as successful as the first so much so that people got so excited they started pushed money under the door of the theatre. April 7, 1949 was the year that opened South Pacific on Broadway and ran for five years after having performed 1,925 times till 16th January, 1954. In the history of Broadway, South Pacific comes on number five for its longest running performance. The musical was a brain child production of Rodgers and Hammerstein in association with Leland Hayward, who together not just made the real life depiction of the book Tales of the South Pacific on stage but also brilliantly improvised the original characters to match the talent of the cast.
The musical has undertaken a numerous tours. Running for a period of five years, The US Tour of 1950-55 opened in 118 cities. London Revival Tour of 1988 ran from January 20, 1988 to January 14, 1989 at the Prince of Wales Theatre. With trivial changes in the musical score and the original screenplay, South Pacific made its 2001 London Revival Tour performing at the Royal National Theatre from December 2001 to April 2002. In the year 2005, South Pacific came out with its concert version edited to a two hour performance at the Carnegie Hall. The concert version though cut short to two hours still included all the songs and the musical score. The production became so popular that it became worthy to be telecasted. On April 26, 2006 the PBS Network telecasted the concert version of the musical which further made it an unforgettable performance. Talking of the performance the drama critic of New York Times Ben Brantley wrote, that, "The entire production was performed in a state of nearly unconditional rapture. It was one of those nights when cynicism didn't stand a chance."
At the Blackpool Grand Theatre on August 28, 2007, South Pacific started their new UK touring. This tour is still acknowledged for its staging. In 2008, South Pacific opened with its first Broadway Revival at Lincoln Center's Vivian Beaumont Theatre on April 3. The tour was such a huge success that in the New York Times Ben Brantley wrote, "I know we're not supposed to expect perfection in this imperfect world, but I'm darned if I can find one serious flaw in this production". The latest in the long list of South Pacific's tour has been a 2008 tour around the US in San Francisco and California at the famous Golden Gate Theatre.
