Sweeney Todd is one of those many urban legends, the existence of whom has haunted people for decades. Although the actual existence of any such human being is highly doubted, but still, some believe it to be true. As the legend goes, Sweeney Todd happens to be a demonic Serial Killer who presents himself as a barber to the world, and lures the wealthy and influential personals of his time, to his shop where he ultimately slit their throat and drops their dead body down where his accomplice, Mrs. Lovett, turns the flesh of those dead bodies, into pies.
Sweeney Todd originally emerged as a character on a serial entitled The String of Pearls that broke on the surface back in 1846. Ever since then the name Sweeney Todd became an urban legend; however the originality of any such historical living being is still argued. Following the fame of the serial, the character of Sweeney Todd has surfaced is several musicals and movies over the course of years.
Sweeney Todd took its place on the big screen in 1936 movie named Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street by George King. The movie featured Tod Slaughter portraying the lead role of Sweeney Todd who is accompanied by Mrs. Lovett during his series of killings. Later on, there came a musical of same name and plot in 1979 which was originally based on the 1973 play of the same name by Christopher Bond. The musical was written by Stephen Sondheim and took the stage on Broadway on March 1, 1979 at the Uris Theatre. Soon after the closure of the original Broadway production, the musical then opened at the London's West End at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane on July 2, 1980, where it starred Denis Quilley for the lead role of Sweeney Todd while Sheila Hancock played Mrs. Lovett. After running 157 successful performances the musical was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award, which it won in 1980 for being the best new musical.
