In 2005 the musical officially opened its doors for theater goers at The Broadway Theater, direction for this play was given by Gary Griffin, and choreography was done by Donald Byrd, famous TV and film personality Oprah Winfrey was among the producers. This musical closed after three years in 2008 with 910 regular shows and 30 previews and to date this play has grossed an amazing $103 million. Due to great response from the audience this musical went on a First National Tour in 2007 and had an extended run in Chicago Illinois at the very spacious Cadillac Palace Theater, the premier in Chicago was a grand red carpet one with lots of famous personalities attending it. Initially the play took off very well but during summer’s ticket prices were reduced mainly due to low attendance. This tour has recently staged The Color Purple at the very beautiful Pantages Theater in Los Angeles California.
The second National Tour started in 2010 from Lyric Opera House with a slight change in the cast and the tour will be performing this musical in cities like Fort Lauderdale, Nashville, Omaha, Durham and Mobile. The Color Purple popularity led to the novels adaptation into not only a musical but also a film that was released in 1985, this movie had veteran actors like Oprah Winfrey as Sofia, Whoopi Goldberg as Celie and Danny Glover as Albert, and it was directed by acclaimed director Stephen Spielberg. This movie got 11 nominations in Academy Awards including Best Film but didn’t win.
