The Woman in Black is the new stage play which is based on one of the best horror novels by the celebrated author Susan Hill. The author tells a spine chilling tale of a specter which lurks around in a small English town. It is definitely a page turner which keeps the reader on the edge of his seat. The throat drying tale has several times been retold in pictorial form, most notably in the form of 1989 TV movie by ITV network. But none of it got as famous as the Stephen Mallatratt stage presentation which wins hands down.
The stage play is currently playing only in English theater since they are already well familiar with the ghost story presented so beautifully by Susan Hill. The audience was anticipating the stage production eagerly even before actual work on the adaptation began. The horror stage show first opened in Scarborough, United Kingdom at the Stephen Joseph Theater in the Round. It received positive reviews all around and was met excellently by the general public. So in order to comply with the ever increasing and popular demand of the people, the play opened at the Fortune Theater in London's West End as well which was way back in 1989. The show has continued to run even today. Currently, it is playing at the Churchill Theater in Bromley. One of the interesting things about the production is that it has remarkably small cast and crew; nonetheless, it remains a hair straightening show which is a must for all horror movie fans.
Just like any great show, the plot of the West End adaptation has been kept simple but ambiguous enough to allow mystery to crawl in within and lurk around the corner to pop up when you least expect it to scare daylights out of you! The story begins when Arthur Kibbs, a solicitor goes to the funeral of an elderly lady to a house situate on Nine Lives Causeway. Since the house is completely surrounded by sea and marshes, it gets completely cut off from mainland and of course, the outside world on high tide. Kibbs experiences several unexplained, strange noises which force him to think that there is more to this place than meets the eyes and with this, the story begins.
Kibbs gets occupied with some paper work of the late elderly lady. But Kibbs continues to experience some spine chillingly horrible events including being haunted by the Woman in Black. Some of the most horrifying events include the sounds of a horse cart, struggling with something and the horse whining. This unexplained but haunting nevertheless disturbance is followed by a horrible scream of a child.
