The author was initially not sure that the story could be brought to stage. Tom Morris was interested in making a play about animals with the South African puppeteers, the Handspring Puppet Company. After reading War Horse, Morris finalized it for production, and when Morpurgo heard about it, he finds it hard to believe that his writing was to be staged on Broadwat. But his story combined with the excellent puppetry, great music and a unique design has proven to be smash hit. War Horse is a compelling tale of bravery, loyalty, tragedy and the bond between man and horse. The story revolves around a Devon horse Joey, who is sold to serve in the cavalry at the beginning of the First World War. His extraordinary journey takes him to the deadly battle fields of France and Germany. He is soon caught in the middle of the fire and sees heroism, death and disease and fate has him ending up serving on both sides to the war. His original owner, Albert has never forgotten about him, and the play follows his journey into a dangerous world to find his treasured horse.
 
The show premiered in 2007 in South Bank, London at the Royal National-Olivier Theatre. It became a sensation overnight and had two very successful runs here. In 2009 it began playing at the West End in the New London Theatre to full capacity audiences, and the Times has declared it to be the the Theatrical Event of The Decade. It has broken the West End record for the highest weekly gross and has been seen by more than a million people including the Queen along with Prince Philip. It has also won a number of awards including an Evening Standard Theatre Award, a London Critics' Circle Theatre Award and two Olivier Awards. In 2011, War Horse came to Broadway and started playing at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre. It got a remarkable reception by the audiences and the critics. It has won a Drama League Award, a Drama Desk Award, a Fred & Adele Astaire Award and three Outer Critics Circle Awards. It was also nominated for and won and won in five categories at the Tony Awards including Best Play and Best Direction and another Special Tony Award for the Handspring Puppet Company. A movie adaptation directed by celebrated Director/Producer Steven Spielberg is near completion and scheduled to be released in December, 2011. In 2012, War Horse is all set to go to Toronto Canada with the same group as the one behind the successful Broadway and West End productions. Another production of the play is planned for a United States National Tour, beginning in Los Angeles, California in June 2012.
