FedExForum is a stadium in downtown Memphis, which serves as the home ground of several teams including NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies and NCAA’s men’s’ basketball program from University of Memphis. Officially, the arena opened in 2004 following the derecho wind storm of July 2003, which almost destroyed the cranes being built close to the famous Beale Street. The construction cost of the arena was two hundred and fifty million dollars, and it is currently under the ownership of Memphis City. The stadium’s naming rights were bought by FedEx, one of the city’s top most businesses, for ninety two million dollars. Financing of the FedExForum was carried out with two hundred and fifty million dollars worth of public bonds that were issued under the PBA of Memphis. Besides hosting basketball games, the arena is also known to hold ice hockey, family shows and concerts. In 2011, the arena was nicknamed The Grindhouse by Tony Allen, and has today become just as popular among Memphis fans as FedExForum tickets.
The designing of FedExForum was undertaken by Ellerbe Becket architectural firm, while its concrete based work was done with the assistance of Apac and Dowco Construction. The stadium is over eight hundred thousand square feet in size and cover a round area of fourteen acres with a dome. Its playing floor is below ground level and the venue has a seating capacity of more than eighteen thousand for basketball games with a thousand seats on the premiere courtside. It contains twenty-seven courtside suites, four party suites, eighty club boxes and thirty-two club suites. Also included in the arena is full-sized basketball court meant for practice purposes that can be seen from the stadium’s rather massive lobby.
The interiors of FedExForum were designed as a tribute to the musical heritage of Memphis, with murals and paintings portraying some of the renowned artists of the city. Most of its restaurants have been named in connection to the overall music theme of the forum with the beautiful Blue Note Lounge and Opus restaurant. Two other restaurants are driven by sponsors with jack Daniel’s Old No. 7 located in the arena’s Grand Lobby and Lexus Lounge off its floor. This arena is the first among many to bring in the recent see-through units of shot clock that allow the viewers sitting just behind the basket, to watch the game without any interference from the clocks. The idea for such a design came from an NBA New Jersey Nets’ fan sitting behind the basket, who requested changes to the view, in response to which Daktronics came up with an innovative solution in 2004.
Some of the most notable events at FedExForum include the basketball tournament held by NCAA Mens’ Division I in 2009, as well as the basketball tournament for NCAA women’s Division I in 2010. The venue has hosted performances by Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood and many others. Get in line for FedExForum tickets and prepare yourself for a fun event whether it is sports, family shows or concerts.
