KFC Yum! Center, sports spectators can watch their favorite basketball and volleyball teams battle it while chewing down on deep-fried, baked and crunchy snacks. The center is located on Main Street and is part of the Ohio River waterfront in Louisville, Kentucky.
Conceived primarily to showcase the Louisville Cardinals, University of Louisville’s men’s and women’s basketball teams, KFC Yum! Center was more than three years in the making. From the onset of the project, the location and financing options posed considerable controversy. Some university officials and task force members strongly proposed a site on campus grounds or on the Louisville Water Company, whereas others were proponents of the waterfront area. Even though a study showed that the water company site as the cheaper option, Kentucky governor and Louisville mayor formally designated the waterfront site for building the KFC Yum! Center in March 2006. Home to a population of three-quarters of a million, Louisville is the largest city of the state of Kentucky and is recognized as the borderline city of the American North and South. The city, whose proximity to the Ohio River made it an important shipping port during the 19th century, is a hub of festivity with events such as Kentucky Derby, the Thunder Over Louisville fireworks display, Kentucky State fair, annual Beatles Festival and Ironman Louisville.
Coming in at a stupendous price tag of $ 238 million, KFC Yum! Center was naturally expected to deliver more than its predecessor, Freedom Hall. The latter venue, which was the former home of the Louisville Cardinals basketball teams and had a capacity of 19,000, is located in the Kentucky Exposition Center and is interestingly still in operation. The KFC Yum! Center upped the seating capacity to 22,000 and has a combined space of 721,762 square feet amongst its seven levels. With just under 6 million pounds of structural steel, this metal behemoth also houses 71 luxury suites, 27 permanent and 32 mobile concession stands, including KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell.
After opening in October 2010 adjacent to the Clark Memorial Bridge, the KFC Yum! Center has become an ideal place to host events such as concerts and other shows besides the regular basketball mania. Upcoming acts include Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Sade, John Legend and a sparkling performance of Disney on Ice: Mickey and Minnie’s Magical Journey.
In a bid to canvas the blank spaces in KFC Yum! Center’s interior, “Further” a 3-dimensional stainless steel public work of art adorns some 200 feet of the west side of the Main Concourse. So book your KFC Yum! Center tickets to savor some tantalizing treats for your eyes and ears and eat what your heart desires.
