Nassau Coliseum, properly named as Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum is an in-door arena located in Uniondale, New York. It is owned by the Nassau Country, New York and operated by the SMG Management. Nassau Coliseum is a multi-purpose huge arena, formed in1972. It is spread over an area of sixty three acres and the construction cost then was 32 million dollars. The venue is located 31 km east of main New York City and is the home to the famous National Hockey League, ‘New York Islanders’.
Nassau Coliseum is located on the Mitchel Field which used to be the Army/Airforce base. The base closed down in 1960 and declared the whole area of 1200 acres as the surplus land. That was the time when the Nassau Country decided to buy a chunk of that land from the Government. Numerous ideas were under consideration and it was later decided to build the multi-purpose venue here. An order was given to construct a 15,000 capacity arena. The building is a dedication to the loyal people who have sacrificed their lives for the country. It started operations in 1972 and was renovated in the year 1984 with the seating capacity increased to 18,000.
The architect and engineers for the building are Welton Becket and Associates. It hosts all kinds of events throughout the year which include charity events, award ceremonies, exhibitions and public events.
